Is Your Home Safe?
When was your panel last inspected?

The following photos were taken June 15, 2009 in a Mountainview Road residence in Georgetown, Ontario. The homeowners were without power for almost 48 hours. Fortunately in this case no one was injured, but it could have been much worse.

Outdated fuse panels

Many homes with outdated fuse panels have aluminum wiring. Each home is different and requires its own assessment. The most common issue with aluminum wiring is overheating due to failure of terminations at devices or joints. It is necessary to remove cover plates and outlets (receptacles, switches, fixtures, appliance connections as well as those in the panel) to do a proper inspection.

Inspection Overdue

The plywood behind the panel was extremely close to catching fire. These homeowners know how lucky they are. They aren't going to be another unfortunate statistic. Electrocution and fire are real threats. In 2002, electrical problems accounted for 13,217 fires, 372 injuries and deaths; and over $383 million in damages in Canada.

Aluminum Wiring

Aluminum wiring itself is safe, provided proper connections and terminations are made without damaging the wire, and approved materials are installed in accordance with the Electrical Code and the manufacturer's instructions. Other peace of mind devices many home owners are unaware of are Panel Mounted Surge Protectors and Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI). A home electrical system is the most extensive, and yet the least maintained system. Deker Electric feels it is of great importance to keep local home owners informed, and we strongly recommends an electrical inspection.
